Description

Learn to make a classic American apple pie, a perfect dessert for any holiday gathering. This recipe guides you through creating a delicious homemade pie with a flaky crust and a sweet, spiced apple filling.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups sliced apples (about 8-10 medium apples, a mix of varieties like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp recommended)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 recipe for double pie crust (for a 9-inch pie)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice.
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt.
  4. Pour the sugar mixture over the apples and toss to coat evenly.
  5. Pour the apple filling into the bottom pie crust. Dot the top of the filling with the small pieces of butter.
  6. Place the top pie crust over the filling. Crimp the edges of the top and bottom crusts together to seal. Cut vents in the top crust.
  7. Brush the top crust with the beaten egg wash and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of sugar.
  8. Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F (220°C).
  9. Reduce the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) and continue baking for another 35-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  10. If the crust starts to brown too quickly, loosely tent the pie with aluminum foil.
  11. Let the pie cool completely on a wire rack for at least 2-3 hours before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Using a mix of apple varieties provides a more complex flavor.
  • Ensure apples are evenly coated with the sugar and spice mixture.
  • Allowing the pie to cool completely is crucial for the filling to set properly.
