A comforting dish of tender cabbage leaves wrapped around a savory filling of ground beef and rice, simmered in a rich tomato sauce.

- 1 large head of cabbage
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Olive oil
Instructions
- Carefully remove the outer leaves of the cabbage.
- Blanch the cabbage in boiling water until the leaves are softened.
- In a bowl, combine ground beef, rice, onion, garlic, salt, and pepper.
- Place a spoonful of the meat mixture in the center of each cabbage leaf and roll it up.
- In a large pot, combine crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper.
- Place the cabbage rolls in the tomato sauce.
- Simmer for at least 1 hour, or until the cabbage is very tender.
Notes
- You can add a bay leaf to the sauce for extra flavor.
- Serve with a dollop of sour cream or a sprinkle of fresh parsley.
- This recipe can be made ahead of time.
