- 8 cups stale bread cubes (about 1 pound)
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 2 cups chopped yellow onion (about 2 medium)
- 1.5 cups chopped celery (about 3 ribs)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
- 0.5 teaspoon dried sage
- 0.25 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1.5 cups chicken broth
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Spread bread cubes on a baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until lightly toasted.
- Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and celery and cook until softened, about 8-10 minutes.
- Add garlic, salt, pepper, sage, and thyme. Cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
- In a large bowl, combine toasted bread cubes and the vegetable mixture.
- In a small bowl, whisk together chicken broth and egg. Pour over the bread mixture and toss gently to combine.
- Transfer stuffing to a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until heated through and golden brown on top.
Notes
- Use day-old bread for best results.
- You can add other herbs like rosemary or parsley.
- For a richer flavor, use turkey broth instead of chicken broth.
