Description

A simplified cottage pie recipe made in a skillet, without the traditional mashed potato topping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp dried rosemary
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Brown ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Add onion, carrots, and celery to the skillet. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Stir in garlic, thyme, and rosemary. Cook for 1 minute more.
  5. Pour in beef broth and tomato sauce. Bring to a simmer.
  6. Add frozen peas. Season with salt and pepper.
  7. Reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened.
  8. Serve hot.

Notes

  • You can add a layer of shredded cheese on top during the last few minutes of cooking.
  • Feel free to use other vegetables like mushrooms or bell peppers.
  • For extra flavor, use a bay leaf while simmering.
