Description
Tender beef meatballs simmered in a rich, savory onion sauce, inspired by classic French onion soup flavors. Perfect for a comforting fall or winter meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley, for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
- Form the mixture into 1-inch meatballs.
- Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat.
- Brown the meatballs on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove meatballs from skillet and set aside.
- Add the sliced onion to the same skillet and cook until softened and lightly browned, about 8-10 minutes.
- Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Stir in the dried thyme.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer. Return the meatballs to the skillet.
- Cover the skillet and transfer to the preheated oven. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until meatballs are cooked through.
- Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
Notes
- For deeper flavor, you can caramelize the onions for a longer period.
- Serve with mashed potatoes, noodles, or crusty bread to soak up the sauce.
