Description

Make delicious from-scratch Amish baked beans. This recipe is easy to follow.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound dried navy beans
  • 8 cups water
  • 1/2 pound bacon, diced
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper


Instructions

  1. Rinse the beans and soak them overnight in water.
  2. Drain the beans.
  3. In a pot, combine beans and 8 cups of fresh water.
  4. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour, or until beans are tender.
  5. While beans simmer, cook bacon in a large pot until crispy. Remove bacon, leaving some grease.
  6. Add onion to the pot and cook until softened.
  7. Add cooked bacon, beans, molasses, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and pepper.
  8. Stir well.
  9. Bake in a preheated oven at 300°F (150°C) for 2-3 hours, or until beans are tender and the sauce has thickened. Stir occasionally.

Notes

  • You can add a ham hock for extra flavor.
  • Adjust the sweetness to your liking.
