- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- For the Frosting:
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat until combined.
- Gradually add boiling water, mixing until batter is smooth.
- Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool completely.
- Make the frosting: Beat butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with milk. Beat until smooth. Stir in vanilla.
- Frost the cooled cake.
Notes
- You can substitute the buttermilk with a mixture of milk and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar.
- For a richer flavor, use dark cocoa powder.
- Adjust the amount of milk in the frosting to reach your desired consistency.
