Description

A simple one-bowl chocolate cake using sourdough discard. It’s moist, rich, and delicious.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup sourdough discard
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup boiling water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a round cake pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the sourdough discard, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add the egg, milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until combined.
  4. Pour in the boiling water and stir until the batter is smooth.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • You can frost the cake with your favorite frosting.
  • For a richer flavor, use dark cocoa powder.
  • Make sure your sourdough discard is active for best results.
