A simple one-bowl chocolate cake using sourdough discard. It’s moist, rich, and delicious.

- 1 cup sourdough discard
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup boiling water
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a round cake pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the sourdough discard, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the egg, milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until combined.
- Pour in the boiling water and stir until the batter is smooth.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- You can frost the cake with your favorite frosting.
- For a richer flavor, use dark cocoa powder.
- Make sure your sourdough discard is active for best results.
